Frequently Asked Questions
What are the costs involved in making a website?
Costs can vary greatly depending on the complexity of the project. Like any
major purchase, the final tab depends on the features chosen. A detailed quote
requires some thinking on your part as to the features you desire. A planning
meting is necessary to determine the scope of the proposed site
How much money is required to get started?
Oshima requests a deposit of 25% at the one-quarter point in the project.
What if I don't like the site that is produced?
On initiation of the project you will be requested to approve an prototype
design of the project. Your input will be solicited at certain points along
the way, and you will be able to view progress of the site via the password-protected
Client area. This client involvement should prevent "surprises"
on completion of the project. If there are specific features that you are
not pleased with, alternative designs will be produced.
Will I be able to update the site myself?
That is certainly possible, but depends on the complexity of the site. Who
will maintain and ease of maintenance is a major factor to consider in determining
the scope of the site.
I need a website but don't have the time or knowledge
to maintain it. Can you help?
Certainly. At your request, a quote will be prepared for site maintenance.
Do
I "own" the website on completion?
During the development process, you own any materials, in electronic or paper
form supplied to Oshima. Once the site is completed and the agreed apon balance
is paid, you will have the "keys" to the site and will own the final
product.
I've
seen a lot of "do-it-yourself" software. Why can't I just build
it myself?
You certainly can go that route. Just be sure that the software you choose
can provide you with the functionality you're looking for. A major question
for many business people to ask themselves is "is there a more productive
use of my time that creating a website?"
I
already have a website, though I'm not happy with it. Can you look it over
and suggest improvements?
Certainly. Oshima can provide an online evaluation of
your website without any obligation. E-mail your url to [email protected]
I
hear a lot about "search engines", and "optimization".
What do these terms refer to?
Search engines are the computers of Yahoo, AltaVista
and others that are the "phonebooks" of the internet. Some require
manual submissions, others send out "robots" to scan the web looking
for sites to register. Search engines are an absolutely crucial source of
traffic to your site. Configuring your website to be "found" by
these engines is a vital, though oft neglected component of good web design.
I
want a website with my company's name. How do I go about that?
To check on the availability of a name go to CIRA
(Canadian Internet Registration Authority) You have many options such as .com,
.org, .ca etc. Keep in mind that most common names are already taken. Once
you settle on a name, CIRA will provide many options for local registration
authorities to get your name online.
How
long does it take to develop a website?
Anywhere from two weeks to two month. The timeframe depends on the scope of
the site, how soon (and often) you are available to meet, and how quickly
you can provide the necessary content to build the site.
